Our Philosophy
Our philosophy in breeding Miniature Schnauzers is to produce the healthiest, best tempered, most beautiful puppies that we can. In order to achieve these goals, we have implemented the following strategies:
Health: Our adult Mini Schnauzers are OFA certified for their hearts and patellas. In addition, we submit samples of their DNA to Embark for genetic testing. This is to ensure that we are breeding healthy dogs that are genetically compatible with each other.
Temperament: I have been raising and breeding Miniature Schnauzers for 10 years and have had several dogs during that time frame. I have seen all different types of temperaments and Schnauzer tendencies. When a dog has been selected to be part of our breeding program, it is because I see character qualities that I would like to reproduce in future offspring. My goal is to produce easy-going, well-rounded, friendly puppies that will grow to be adult dogs with those same personality traits. That all starts with the parents. If I see personality traits in an adult dog that I don't like (ex. excessive barking, separation anxiety, dislike of strangers, aggression, dislike of children, biting, etc., then I will NOT breed that dog. I don't care how much money I have invested in that particular dog, I would rather spay/neuter that dog and place her/him in a well-suited pet home, rather than pass those qualities onto future offspring. As a result of this type of selective breeding, the puppies I produce are more likely to exhibit the same positive personality traits as their parents. That is the "nature" part of a dog's temperament. The next component is "nurture" and that is where how I raise my puppies comes into play. I believe in a very hands-on approach to raising puppies. Our puppies are born and raised in our bedroom, and at 4 weeks make the transition to the puppy area in our living room where they are centrally located in our home and receive lots of interaction and stimulation during the day. We have a large family with lots of children. Our puppies are used to the noise and busyness of a big household. The puppies are held, touched and loved daily by us and our children interact with our puppies through careful supervision to ensure the puppies associate positive feelings with children from a very early age. This type of interaction reinforces positive development in their personalities.
Conformation: While health and temperament are my top priorities in producing excellent pets, I can't ignore the importance of conformation. I strive to produce beautiful examples of the Schnauzer breed. Again, that all begins with the parents. I specialize in breeding a blend of European and American lines to help pull out the best qualities a Schnauzer has to offer. Every dog chosen for my breeding program must meet not only AKC's requirements but also the requirements for what I personally feel is a quality representation of the breed.
